Rare writer ask game: name three pieces of media that are not novels/short stories or movies/TV that were formative for you, and tag three people.

Oh damn, this is tricky and I love that. I don't know how much any of these are connected to my writing specifically, but they were formative to who I am and obviously that's always gonna tie into my writing somehow.

1. Ocarina of Time. It always will be one of my favourite video games, and the kind of games I like now are still often reflective of what I liked about it. Also, I said recently in another ask that Sparrabeth was my first ship, and it was definitely the first one I went all in on, but Link/Sheik was probably actually where I started (that Bolero of Fire bit, am I right?) Sheik was also probably technically my first queer fictional crush.

2. This feels cringe to admit 😅, but Adam Lambert's Glam Nation tour. I was 19 and juuuuust starting to internally acknowledge and accept myself as queer, and I would watch all the videos from the concerts and dance along in my room and sigh dreamily over Tommy Joe Ratliff's knees buckling while he got snogged within an inch of his life. It was the first time I remember being excited about being queer, because it seemed so damn cool. ("Fun" side note; writing this made me go "the heck ever happened to Tommy Joe anyway?" and apparently now he's a far-right Christian Trumpster, so that's a thing that happened. Somewhat disorienting that he was a little part of my journey away from that and then he went into it. Booooo.)

2. This song. One of my earliest memories is of my dad holding me and singing this song to me. I still can't listen to it without tearing up. And really just a lot of music I associate with being a kid in the 90s. There's so many songs that take me back to my mom hitting record on the tape deck when they came on the radio, to the way my dad whistled along to classic rock. But this one is right down at the foundation.

Have you watched the recent Fallout television show? Word on the street is that it's like Twelve/Clara. It might be the sort of dynamic you're interested in anyway, Beauty and the Beast type business. I haven't seen it myself but wanted to pass it on.

I haven't watched it yet, but some people I follow are into it and yes it looks extremely relevant to my interests. I wouldn't say twelveclara from what I've seen about it (though I'm interested to hear people's takes on that bc obviously they'd know better if they've actually watched), but certainly B&tB, Reylo, Rumbelle, maybe Sparrabeth.

I'd heard the show turned out shockingly good and was all 'that's nice but I refuse to get involved with an ongoing series from America until it has an ending so I know whether to have hope or not' because, as we've learned, NEVER LOVE ANYTHING, but the more I see about this ship the more my resolve is weakening. It looks so goooood *writhes*

I've barely played any Fallout because I am a fantasy and idealism person not a sci-fi and cynicism person, so given a choice of the Bethesda oeuvre I was always going to pick the Elder Scrolls games to waste hundreds of hours on lol. Set in the post-apocalypse US with western motifs versus set in a magical-historical world with high fantasy motifs? Yeah, the result was predictable. Morrowind/ESIII is one of my favourite experiences of all time, it's the only fictional mythology I'm aware of that genuinely feels like real mythology and Morrowind feels like a real place in a way no other game setting ever has.

But the Fallout aesthetic and use of great popular music is so well executed, plus having Ron Perlman narrate their iconic opening cutscenes, so I've always really appreciated that. The pastiche-as-satire is masterful.

Anyway, I've been teetering for a week or so and will probably cave and watch it soon. Bc yeah, that's my shit.

In a way thank god I didn't see POTC until all parts came out , I won't have tolerated the idea of Jack being swallowed by that beast it broke my heart , oh and I'm getting mixed signals but can you explain to me the relationship between Jack and lizy ? From your point of view and from the movie point of view. And why would she kiss him if she's engaged to Will ? It doesn't make any sense

To answer your question - Elizabeth kissed Jack even though she was engaged to Will because of two things: Curiosity and Piracy.

She did it because she has become a pirate (or arguably, she’d always been a pirate, and just needed to be let out of her cage), which just goes hand in hand with her curiousity about Jack. Jack CALLED it in this scene in P2, that she wanted to know what it felt like to be free, to act on selfish impulse, to do what she wants to do because she wants it. That ALL comes to pass in the kiss scene. Kissing him was freedom; was selfish; was doing WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO BECAUSE SHE WANTED IT. She also used the kiss to literally CHAIN HIM TO THE MAST, condemning him to DEATH in order to save herself and the crew. It doesn’t get more piratey than using sex to send someone to their death to achieve your own ends. ‘You will come over to my side, I know it.’ ‘We are very much alike, you and I.’ IN-FUCKING-DEED.

Also I like this meta about the kiss:

oh god the jack/elizabeth kiss tho, its basically chokingly full of manipulation on both ends and when jack realizes why she does it as the locks in the handcuffs ring home, he’s not even angry or disappointed. there’s a big fat smile on his face like he’s won a jackpot because that’s just it, he’s got her, he’s turned her to his side just like she turned him onto hers a few minutes ago when he returned to his crew mostly because of what she said to him. but it worked both ways didn’t it ? they both won the game but he gets to win it last and best of all because she’s going to leave him there and she’s kissed him with her fiancee not ten feet away from them. so that’s it, there’s no sense to look angry or betrayed or project any emotion that isn’t worth the fleeting moment of an upper hand he gets with her here. this is his final triumph before the end. the young girl who’d looked up to him and got stupidly drunk with him on an island maybe only a year or so before had him in chains and played him well enough to trick him into going down with his ship. but it still isn’t her victory, it’s his. he has one last final word to say to her, and so he does, the word that means her freedom as well as a relinquishment of everything she held to be worthy. she is him and he knows it, knows the one words whose implications she both covets and fears. “pirate" 

They both just truly and immediately see each other for who they really are. Jack never sees Lizzie as anything less than a fucking king and literally makes her one at the end. Lizzie never sees jack as ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ from the moment she meets him. She knows he’s a good man and not the terrifying rogue she’s read about. They bring out, not the best or the worst, but the TRUTH in each other.

They also both embody everything that the other wants, not only in a lover but in life. Elizabeth to Jack is like the sea in human form - ‘as harsh and untameable as the sea.’ And Jack to Elizabeth is freedom. Just pure, uninhibited freedom. Sailing all around the world, no rules, no corsets, no societal obligations; just freedom.

If you’re STILL not feelin’ this or getting it, I honestly sometimes feel that Sparrabeth videos explain more than I could ever word vomit to you

do you ever think about how much attraction and feelings jack and elizabeth have for each other and how important their impact have been in each other’s life

for starters, let’s begin from elizabeth’s point of view. in dead man’s chest, the only thing she keeps saying is how much she wants to find will and save him. so at the beginning, that’s where the compass points, towards the chest, and jack prepared sailing to this direction. but as the movie went on she starts feeling confused about what she REALLY wants. jack embodies freedom and piracy for her. and in a way, that’s what she really dreamed of, during her entire life. being free, on a ship, doing whatever she’s eager to and going wherever she wishes to be without receiving orders from anyone, freedom. there’s also this special connection they have, the flirting. but this teasing thing these two have is so heavy that she never had this with any other character. like, for real, sometimes you literally think they’re going to make up on that boat in front of the whole crew. so the compass, that shows you what you really want, worked perfectly fine. and it pointed in jack’s directions. two. fucking. time. like at this point it’s more of a confirmation than a revelation. she desperately wants to fight it, to deny it, but she can’t. the compass has spoken lol. and i’m not a superstitious kind of person but 👀

now let’s analyze jack’s point of view. at the end of dmc, when he realizes he has been trapped by elizabeth on his own ship, he doesn’t even feel hatred, he’s… amazed. amazed by this beautiful ‘sophisticate’ woman who turned out to be a real pirate. he doesn’t resent her. the man is about to die because that bitch chained him and left him there to be eaten by a giant octopus and he freaking SMILES because he’s proud of her. i mean, for real, that’s one of the most fucked up yet interesting thing i’ve ever seen in a fictional relationship. there are also so many other examples (that were formerly given in other rants here so i’m not gonna enumerate them) in awe that show how jack feels about her, how he sees her, and that was also very interesting because it showed the complexity of their dynamic. i’m going to talking about the new movie now because as much as i hate how they handled jack’s character i was pretty happy with the sparrabeth hints that we got. okay so i know the 'does mommy ever ask about me’ scene might seems too pervert and inappropriate (it actually was considering he was talking to henry, her son, lmao) but i liked it. and i’m probably biased because i would have given anything to hear jack mentioning elizabeth. what really disturbed me was how jack made sex jokes about literally any woman he crossed path with, especially carina and the comments he made in that undressing scene on the boat like please… no but it’s different with elizabeth because he has history with her. and i think a part of him tried to hide his disappointment when henry said 'no’ with (sexual) humor. and the moment henry tells him who his parents are and jack straight up responds with a look of repugnance on his face 'you’re the evil spawn of these two’ lmaooo you can literally feel the aversion he has for the will/elizabeth relationship. now let’s talk about the last scene, WHERE HE SEES WILL AND ELIZABETH KISSING AND SAYS 'WHAT A REVOLTING SIGHT’ OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND HE HAS THAT DISGUSTED LOOK ON HIS FACE I COULDN’T STOP LAUGHING like seriously how in the hell is he still jealous AFTER 19 YEARS OF NOT SEEING HER?? it’s just so obvious that he still feels something for her I’m bald

We are a club of die-hard Sparrabeth fan fiction readers and authors who simply love this fandom and many of the tales written since the beginning of this Sparrabeth phenomenon. Every other week we continue to present our selection of vintage, Sparrabeth fanfiction that we have read and would like to recommend for reading. Usually I am known for always submitting the ‘jawbreakers’ which means the stories that are like 100 chapters and takes forever to read. My colleagues are much easier on you, and so this time I am going to follow suit and steal a page from their books. Sometimes bigger is not always better, and this is a short and sweet kind of tale that is entertaining and yet spicy. I find it a delightful read and it gets you to the Sparrabeth feels quickly, when you are in a hurry and want ‘em fast! LOL! A lot of flare and full of fun, so take a break, a deep breath, and make ready as we brace for Spring to get underway. Meanwhile, for the time being, sit back, relax, and enjoy this entertaining Sparrabeth Chronicles tale!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Short EXCERPT FROM Foxboro’s "Petals of a Rose" Chapter 1

Jack stood on deck and watched as the crew left the ship. They had docked in Tortuga a couple of hours before. The men had made the Black Pearl safe and were now off to enjoy their rewards.

Elizabeth, little straight backed and easily recognizable to Jack amidst the weathered seamen, was heading into town with his newest crewmember, a lad of 20 years, who had joined the ship at their last port of call.

Jack’s eyes narrowed. ‘I’ve just let her walk out of here with a virtual stranger.’ He thought, ‘A pirates at that!’

“Mister Gibbs!” Jack shouted.

His First-mate hurried over.

“Capt’n?”

“Mister Gibbs. Could ye explain to me exactly why Miss Swann is in the company of that man?”

Gibbs peered along the dock and struggled to pick Elizabeth and that man out. When he spotted them, she had her head thrown back, laughing at something Ben had said, “Their friendly, Capt’n.” he said, “They seem to have ‘hit it off’.”

“Come on, Jack, Ben’s no stranger. He’s a nice lad, fitted into the crew real well, he has.”

“Yeah.” Jack said grimly, imagining slipping his hands around Ben’s throat. “He hangs ‘round Bars…..and Pirates!”

Surprised and amused, Gibbs glanced over. “So do we!?”

“Tis not the point, and ye know it!” Jack said, vexed.

“Ye can’t just let her ‘hit it off’ with some man, and then let her waltz off with im!”

Well, well well........I had read this before and reviewed, but had forgotten that so I just had to read it again @apirateslifeforme123 and I actually think I enjoyed it more the second time around. :) I could not put ANOTHER review there because I tried on each chapter after just reading them again! LOL! So, I found the share button and Tumblr link there....and Voila!!

I have to tell you how much I love this story. OMG...it is so sexy, sweet (yeah, take it and like it LOL) and just LOVE the way Jack starts off trying to be Mr. macho here and falls like a ton of bricks! LOVE IT> And Lizzy...that little precocious vixen.......oh what she does to our poor Jack, he was a felled tree for a man from the get-go....what a delight to read what they do next.

What a treasure. I remembered the theme, but not the saucy dialogue. I love how @apirateslifeforme123 phrased everything. It charms the life out of you and yet still holds up marvelously as a sexy love story, written with such polish....and provocative panache. Thank you for writing such a FABULOUS story!! I read all four chapters in a row so I would not forget anything I read! LOL! NOW I am going to go to bed happy and dream Sparrabeth.  :) :) :)

AND FOLKS YOU REALLY MUST READ THSI FAN-FIC! If you love Sparrabeth, it is considered one of the best, and it is not too long or too short, and I would consider it a staple love piece.....just right. You will adore it if you love Jack and Lizzie....Please check it out! You will NOT be disappointed!  :)
